100-Amp vs. 200-Amp Panel Upgrades in North County San Diego

Compare 100-amp and 200-amp electrical service for North County homes and learn when a panel upgrade makes sense for EV charging, heat pumps, solar, and future expansion.

By Tim Wheyland

Carlsbad has one of the most desirable housing markets in California, but many of its homes are still running on electrical infrastructure that was never designed for the way people live today.

Homes built in the 1970s and 1980s across Carlsbad and surrounding North County communities were often wired for 100-amp service. That was adequate when electrical demand was lower. It is much less adequate for homes now running central HVAC, EV charging, heat pump water heaters, upgraded kitchens, home offices, and garage circuits.

If your breakers trip frequently, lights dim under load, or you are planning to add major new electrical equipment, it may be time to compare what 100-amp service can realistically support versus what a 200-amp panel upgrade makes possible.

What a Panel Upgrade Actually Means

An electrical panel upgrade, often called a service upgrade, replaces your existing main breaker panel with a larger-capacity unit. In Carlsbad, the most common upgrade is from 100 amps to 200 amps.

That work involves coordination with SDG&E, a permit through the City of Carlsbad, inspection, and physical replacement of the panel and related service components. A licensed C-10 electrical contractor handles that process from start to finish.

Why North County Homeowners Are Upgrading Now

Several converging trends are pushing older 100-amp systems beyond their intended limits.

EV adoption. Level 2 chargers add a substantial continuous electrical load and are often the first thing that exposes a panel capacity problem.

Solar and battery storage. Homes adding modern energy equipment frequently need better panel layout, breaker space, and service capacity.

Heat pump conversion. As more households electrify HVAC and water heating, total demand climbs.

ADUs and additions. Detached living spaces, workshops, and expanded floorplans often reveal that the existing main service is already undersized.

100 Amps vs. 200 Amps: Practical Difference

A 100-amp panel can still work in a smaller home with modest electrical demand. But once you start layering modern loads, the margin disappears quickly.

A 200-amp panel typically gives homeowners:

  • more room for new circuits
  • better support for EV charging
  • easier planning for HVAC and heat pumps
  • more flexibility for kitchen and laundry upgrades
  • a stronger long-term setup for remodels and resale

For many North County homeowners, the real benefit is not just amperage. It is a cleaner path to future projects without repeatedly hitting the limits of the existing service.

Permit and Inspection Still Matter

This is where working with a local licensed electrician matters. The process generally follows this sequence: permit pulled, SDG&E disconnect scheduled, work completed, inspection requested, and service re-energized after approval.

For most jobs, the installation itself takes one to two days, with scheduling and permit coordination adding time around it.

What to Watch for in Older Homes

If your home was built before 1990, it is worth checking the panel brand, current circuit loading, and grounding system. Older Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels raise particular concern and are often replaced regardless of current usage because of documented safety issues.

Grounding also matters. A modern 200-amp service should be properly grounded and brought into current code alignment as part of the upgrade.

When a 200-Amp Upgrade Makes Sense

A 200-amp upgrade is usually worth serious consideration if you are:

  • adding an EV charger
  • replacing gas appliances with electric equipment
  • planning an ADU or addition
  • remodeling a kitchen or laundry room
  • already seeing signs of overload
  • running out of breaker space
